EXPLOSIONS AND FIRE IN EVIN PRISON

An account of the regime’s prison massacre

Iran’s religious fundamentalist regime has committed a horrible crime against defenseless prisoners at Evin Prison in Tehran. Among the victims were many political prisoners and young protesters who had been recently arrested.

Cell Wing 7 of Evin Prison, where the detained protesters were held, was burned to the ground.

On Saturday evening, October 15th, at 9:50 p.m. local time, a loud explosion was heard coming from Evin Prison in Tehran, where many of those arrested in connection with the uprising are being held. At 10:41 p.m., there were two more large explosions, with flames and smoke subsequently enveloping the entire prison.

At the same time, the sound of gunshots also came from the prison, only to be followed by a hail of weaponry fire and continuous grenade explosions. Several prisoners were observed on the roofs of penitentiary.

A 21-year-old protester, Hossein Jazzi, was among those killed in Evin. The regime stated that 60 prisoners were merely wounded in the incident, but the regime’s special forces gave them no medical attention even though the victims were bleeding profusely.

In the aftermath of this horrible event, Verein Welle took emergency action by appealing to the United Nations and the international community to send a delegation to Iran to investigate the situation at Evin Prison as well as at other prisons across Iran.
